The Toronto region is currently spending $80 billion on transit infrastructure over the next decade on the largest transit expansion program in North America. However, we are not getting nearly as much transit infrastructure as we should be getting for our huge investment.

During the presentation and later discussion with Matti Siemiatycki, Eric touched on a number of factors which lead to increased construction costs such as Intergovernmental and Third Party Agreements, Labour, Procurement, Agency Capacity, Station Design, Standardization, Contingency, and more.

The most important takeaway is that high construction costs are not inevitable. There's a common saying amongst politicians and transit agencies in Canada "it never gets cheaper to build major infrasturcture projects". However that isn't the case, there are many things we can do to bring costs down

To ensure that we can build enough transit to serve our rapidly growing region, we aggressively need to take drastic measures to reduce construction costs.
