which, to be clear, there is a way around each of these in *some* capacity that preserves someone's PDS/account presence, but each one does limit reach of the account that has action taken against them

"bsky dot app" has its own formula on how to handle these, someone could create a competitor

Am doing work in this area. Can say that the main relay indexes suspended accounts on independent PDSs just fine, and they'll work fine with other appviews.

If you are worried about suspension or similar, generate a rotation keypair and add it to your did doc using https://boat.kelinci.net. also download your repository periodically. That's all you need to get shit back up and running elsewhere.

It's likely that content generated by an independent appview with the same lexicons will show up on the main appview once indexed by the relay, subject to whatever blocks or redactions in case of mod actions on the main appview.

Thanks, very helpful. Any idea how it might work with multiple relays, say some org spun up the big relay in addition to Bluesky PBC? I assume the AppView would choose the relay, and users would go with an AppView pulling from the relay they want? Or an AppView could offer choice of relay to users?

not to my knowledge, but I'm not certain if that's because I don't know about an example (such a tool+appview may exist somewhere but for private purposes) or if there's some corners of unfinished "decentralization" that need to be rounded out

The thing is that both the !hide and !takedown flags that come from the mod service seem to have weirdly inconsistent behavior depending on what they're applied to. And there's no explanation of what happens down at the nitty gritty level to content that is flagged.
