Isn’t the thing that verifies DIDs centralized and their moderation service too? Because basically if they ban your account it doesn’t matter it still exists on your PDS. For the majority it’s still gone as you can’t disable the official moderation service (?)
Yes https://plc.directory is centralized. We've had board members and the bsky team tell us that they're working on spinning it out into a separate entity with independent governance.
I should add that Bluesky's moderation of their app instance is centralized (so is Mastodon's), the ATproto network can and does exist independent of that. Banned Turkish users posts showed up in https://Deer.social just fine.
famously mastodon has had consensus based blocking , eg when the nazis / white supremacist tried to join the fediverse we all collectively blocked those servers..
Well not exactly. On mastodon moderation is done per server. If server A bans someone they are not banned on Server B. Unless the account was hosted on server A. But good to know with https://deer.social.
https://Mastodon.social is the largest instance and are a single legal entity who run a Trust & Safety team yeah? So if they decide to pull your account down on their infrastructure, you are still banned from a lot of users. If you're on another server and get blocked, same deal.
The difference is that you’re only blocked for https://mastodon.social users then. Many people in the fediverse aren’t on https://mastodon.social. If Bluesky pulls my account my account is basically unusable, even when running on my own PDS. I personally think there’s a difference. On mastodon servers
Nonsense! Mastodon is clearly distributed via screengrabs. How else would we subscribe to the madness of the TRUTHSOCIAL MASTODON INSTANCE without the screengrab protocol.

But I’m glad seeing the network grow!
