I want to hack at a terminal that looks like it can reach mach 3. I want my numeric keypad to have a ribbon cable. Put all the smart in a closet somewhere, give me something that just shows beautiful glowing green letters.
When I was an undergrad we ran a giant 10base2 cable down the staircase from my bedroom into the basement kitchen to feed a 19" monochrome NCR X terminal largely so people could check email and that is the energy that I crave in my life right now
I miss that 19" X terminal and I do not know what ended up happening to it but we devoted a legitimate routeable IPv4 address to it the past was incredible
I needed to find a fucking tape drive to dump the X terminal's code to run a TFTP server and then run a bootp server that was coped only to our house to avoid accidentally fucking with the otherwise flat network the college had that wasn't DHCP enabled yet
Did the same with a diskless Sun 3/50 and I kind of miss machines that were robust to the extent that if you dropped them it was the floor you worried about, although I don’t miss moving house with them
I was given one of these by my department back in 1990 when I was a CS grad student. I used it with a 1200 bit/sec modem to dial in and check up on my neural network training jobs in the middle of the night 😀
This is such a beautiful device. I would love to have it sitting around in my "technology I will get to eventually" closet. Together with my Raspberry Pi 4, my NAS and HP ml350p Gen9 "hodge-podge" server tower...
Southpaw keebs are a thing. This is my only one, they're potentially handy if you want the mouse space of a 60/65 but occasionally do a lot of numbers, or as a macro pad for space games.
why are yall swooning over retro computers?
personally i don't care as long as i can daily drive it
which is a surprising amount of devices to be absolutely fair
hell i'm writing this on a laptop from ~2015-2017 which is rapidly deteriorating and has SIX gigabytes of ram. not 4. not 8. fucking 6.
Awesome. Had a similar one in 1985. US .mil address for email and direct data exchange. Crypto attachment with weekly mail of paper tapes for decryption. Saw a lot of usage.
And decoded a lot of emails for 3MAW.
