And I, as any self respecting MiG-23 fanboy, will automatically deny this, while tears run down my cheeks.

In truth, the MiG-23's variable intake ramp system is indeed, evidently based on that of the F-4 Phantom's.

The MiG-23 even has the same knife-like struts, that were meant on the carrier based Phantoms to cut the arresting net & allow the canopies to open.

However, despite it being a "just copy", in my opinion, it also has enough differentiating features that make it worth a study, if you are interested in aero-engineering.

First, how are the similar? And in this discussion I'll add the J-8 as a bonus.

All three designs are variable-geometry supersonic intakes, with vertical 2D ramps, with external compression and with boundary layer bleed holes on the movable portion of the ramps. They also have the same mode of venting said boundary layer, through two discharge chutes top & bottom of the ramps.

A cool question maybe you can research about another plane. How come the MiG-19 fighter and Su-7 ground attacker both have so many strange circular ducts on the tops of their fuselage near where the engines are mounted?

of course I got the idea from models of the aircraft in video games, and the holes are hard to see on images online of the mig-19, but I found a good diagram on the Su-7

some people on war thunder reddit already seem to have asked the same question, but the responses seem to be unsourced. Would be interesting to hear back after some research and better images can be dug up
