I'm floored by the absolute lack of rancor, or any presence of a dig or a twist or a tongue-in-cheek joke. Just a woman demonstrating class, grace, and a desire to serve the constituents that sent her.
Let me put it to you this way. Rep. McBride has her own private bathroom in her office. Every other trans person who works or conducts business on the Hill does not.
She literally is there to fight about bathrooms though. When you elect a trans candidate, it's because you care about trans issues and the bathroom is one of the biggest and most important trans issues.
Mace is showing her ass. McBride is showing her class.
Staging a nutty is what the GOP wants her to do.
There is a tide in the affairs of men which taken at the flood leads on to fortune, which was Shakespeare's way of saying "timing is everything in show business.
It sucks, but as much as dems want to pretend that this isn't what the country wants Congress to be, fights like this are exactly what voters wanted, and calling this fight a distraction is how they paint us as out of touch. I Like McBride but this is what the battle is, not kitchen table stuff.
Classiness will not help the transgender kids who are already afraid to use public bathrooms.
There's zero value in taking the high road in these culture war fights. All this does is set a precedent for more institutional dehumanizing of trans people.
I think the best response would be for all (or hopefully all?) the women in Congress to send a strongly-worded protest to the Speaker. Stand up for her, sisters!
She has to refuse to comply. Stand up for herself and all trans people. Get the entire House Dem caucus to rally around her. Mark Pocan seems to be the only one in leadership willing to fight Mace and Johnson on this.
