Probably Blogger > Twitter > Facebook > Wordpress > Instagram > Mastodon (unsuccessful!) > Bluesky
I’m amazed that I seem to have managed to join Twitter before Facebook, but I guess I’m an oddball
Forums! I miss those... IRC, ICQ, MSN Messenger and Skype. Lunarstorm and Skunk. Facebook. Jaiku. Tumblr. Pownce. Bloggy. Twitter. Instagram and the clones. Mastodon for a bit. Bluesky.
Totally agree. The closest thing we have now is Reddit (which I forgot on my list), and Discord (which I also forgot). There's a lot of stuff on the internet apparently!
Yeah, I hate the UI and the notification system, but there are a couple of Discords I enjoy. It's almost like the good old days. Almost. With VC money and questionable intentions attached, as is the new norm.
ooh yes I'm actually a recent lover of reddit - it's not as good as forums for me as I love the layout of forums BUT it's still got some great stuff. Love the really nerdy subreddits.
I seem to remember there being a big "email culture" in the mid-late 90s, lots of email shitposts being sent, chain mails, that kind of thing. Maybe I just had weird friends. And then at uni everyone used ICQ/Messenger.
Started when ’dial up’ was a thing. General browser searching , Yahoo mail, Yahoo groups, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube,Tumblr, Threads, TikTok, Bluesky, Substack
Dial-up BBS > BT Gold > MUD2 > listserv Comix@ > Usenet > normal people got email and internet > FriendsReunited > B3ta > Flickr > weird forum experiment by Ottakar's for staff > Barbelith > Twitter > here.
I am feeling OLD.
I feel you... My earliest steps were MUD/MIST over JANET, then usenet, bulletin boards, topic specific fora... FB came in at some point, Twitter (not until about 2019) and now Bsky
Starting to think I imagined it! It was my transition between MySpace and Facebook. I guess it was a kind of blogging platform but with a social aspect. Google gives me nothing as of course Vox is something else entirely now.
Now starting to think I made up Vox or have the name wrong. It had a question of the day, you could blog, post pics, interact and it had really attractive choices of design, which made it much more aesthetically appealing than MySpace.
I don’t know the order, but I recall a lot of IRC, Friends Reunited, iChat, Yahoo Messenger, Usenet, Yahoo Groups, Geocities, etc, back in the old days.
NationStates (https://nationstates.net/) is basically what it sounds like but hard to explain other than that. Leftbook was a cluster of Facebook groups and pages but in terms of internal culture and UX it was way more like Twitter. Cohost was a post-Elon Twitter successor that folded
