Amen, in fact as I've said over the past few years, I'd say two-thirds of my favorite SFF writers are now women. I'm not sure how that happened (Actually, I do. They kept writing great stuff), but that's how it is.

Also, there is a veritable tsunsmi of monster smut at the moment. This is inherently romantasy. It is worthy and worthwhile and a lot of it is written by women and it's a false dichotomy to put 'proper' romantasy on one side and monster/sff smut on the other.

it's so very interesting to me to see "women are joining the readership fantasy genre due to romantasy" when I distinctly remember an interview with Mercedes Lackey 20+ years ago talking about why women prefer fantasy and mystery compared to other genres

It is a weird take by the Guardian. Having read Anne Mcaffery, Robin Hobb and Ursula le Guin (amongst others) in the last quarter of the last century it doesn't seem to me like women writing fantasy is what's new here.
