I met Bob. He was the nicest man. He really did visit his store front and oversaw the operations. His employees had worked there 10 years or more. He was beloved.
What an incredibly caring man - some companies say their people are their family, but don't always treat their people all that well. Bob embraces that fully. Wow.
I loved what he stood for and how he ensured people were eating good food. And then he took steps to empower his key assets- his employees by giving them ownership! Just phenomenal ❤️❤️
It’s true! It’s 100% Employee Owned. That happy day came in April 30th of 2020: as of our 10th anniversary, Bob’s Red Mill is now 100% employee owned, one of only about 8,000 businesses in the country to achieve this incredible feat.
I love that place! Yes, the products are available at stores nationwide. But going to the actual Bob's Red Mill store in Milwaukie, Oregon, is an experience. 😍 https://www.bobsredmill.com/whole-grain-store.html
I didn’t even know there was a store. Oregon is a bit of a ways from Philadelphia though lol. I will continue to buy all the products like always though. Knowing it’s a good company makes it feel good.
Yes, that's a bit of a drive 🤭
I'm planning on driving over there sometime soon, I hope.
Last time I went...I bought so (too) much. 😁They have huge bins with the most unusual varieties of grains and flours. So much more.
Oh I would love that. I am vegetarian and always love finding new items to add to my diet. My husband isn’t but he has also started to love trying new grains. He loves their 10 grain hot cereal.
I like Bob. I remember going into Bob’s red mill restaurant and shop and you would always see him eating breakfast up there like a normal guy. In his hat and tie.
I'm a satisfied Bob's Red Mill customer, high quality foods.
I love ethical companies and will add,
Tillamook Cheese is a cooperative and I support them.
There are others but I'm not thinking of my groceries at this moment.
I'll make a habit of boosting cooperatives and ethical providers.
Let's support worker-owned companies like this. The profit goes to the workers and their communities, not to distant shareholders. It's a more equitable and resilient model for the economy.
Employee-owned businesses survive longer, have greater employment stability, are more resilient to recessions, and offer more retirement savings to workers! They also seem to have higher wages and happier workers too.
On a much smaller scale, Jesse Thorn turned his podcast network @maximumfun.org, into a worker-owned cooperative instead of selling to a major media company.
He installed an ESOP - Employee stock Option Program - in 2010 you don’t have to be a big employer to use this. Contact largest ESOP installation company and administrator https://www.menke.com

I like Bob too. I'll bet Bob's in a good place for all of eternity.
And this is how it’s done!
