Honestly sometimes interacting with enthusiasts forums (and reddit) makes it seems like they like the idea of video games and talking about video games, but they don't like actually playing video games.
Been that way for the last decade honestly. Racing sim people (Gran Turismo specifically), competitive fps players (CS, valorant, etc.), and people who are into surfing IRL are all the same type of gatekeeping weirdos
