I find the etymology fascinating. The US version is older, using the ~1920 definition of "boob" to mean a silly mistake, and the person who made it first being a "booby", and later all idiots being "boobs". Thus the "boob tube" is a Cathode Ray Tube that turns people into idiots.
The UK version is a pretty obvious derivation and I'm sure it's much more recent because it relies on modern fabrics to even exist. But despite meaning utterly different things, they both arrived at the same sequence of syllables.
I've honestly always thought that it was the other way around, as in North America uses the British definition of the word, I guess this Simpsons clip makes more sense now, given that he starts with "Hi-Fi".
