What if you funneled Niagara Falls through a straw? Watch the latest What If? video collaboration with @minuteearth.bsky.social! youtu.be/pfbzrrcQZjs

Came across this quote from a recent speech by the head of the British army in an FT article. We're so screwed.

Yay www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I imagine all these jobs will go with AI

Punk rock kid buskers (‘The Whops’, tiktok) near the Edgware Rd. They run into Paul Simonon, play Death or Glory for him. He asks if they know The Guns of Brixton. They do -

Spherical harmonics are widely used in graphics. Ever wondered how to compute their derivatives? My HPG 2025 poster shows that it is basically free. It also comes with a code generator for C, C++, Python, GLSL and HLSL to compute SH with derivatives. momentsingraphics.de/HPGPoster202...

This is so neat, I had no idea this was there even after working on the game for a year or so 😅

Mesh intersections is hard ! Three years of agonizing pain summarized in my article that just got accepted to ACM Transactions on Graphics dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... The implementation and the expansion-based arithmetic kernel are available in geogram: github.com/BrunoLevy/ge...

Back to the future! I have a new website: mikeparker.uk

Mostly what I'm taking from iOS 26 is – round rects are back!

If you’re quick, there’s a rare chance to see the only known photographs of the early computing pioneer, Ada Lovelace, as they will go on display in London for a few days. www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/see...

Editing appearance, geometry, lighting with precision is easy with a 3D scene representation. But it's so much more difficult with just an image or photograph. Enter IntrinsicEdit: Precise generative image manipulation in intrinsic space (SIGGRAPH 2025)! intrinsic-edit.github.io

A joint project of @freedom.press and @eff.org: Journalists have been asking us about how to prepare devices for travel. We put together a checklist of things you can do: freedom.press/digisec/blog...

Yes next question. (VCs don't have to be smart, just invest in a wide range of companies, as success is even harder to predict than the stock market. Which, frankly, is just as well.)

FINALLY. Inject it straight into my veins. (Previous max wired speed at our place in mid-Wales was 700Kb on a good day. That is not a typo.)

"As long as the numbers add up, who's going to start investigating?" If you're going to have conversations like that, perhaps not in the quiet coach of a train? 😄

Surprise! Ticket'master' were in bed with the touts all along, actively assisting them: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I mean, this was coming. If the UK doesn't have a team working on this kind of thing as of at least a year ago, all the defence reviews in the world aren't going to help.

The SIGGRAPH Physically Based Shading course is back this year: blog.selfshadow.com/publications...

I decided to open source my implementation of Surfel Radiance Cascades Diffuse Global Illumination, since I'm not longer actively working on it. Hopefully the code can serve as a guide to others who can push this idea further :) github.com/mxcop/src-dgi

Smallpox declined gradually, until the WHO coordinated the global effort to eradicate it

The most disturbing thing about the winter fuel debacle is the chilling effect it'll have on any government which tries to think rationally about pensioner benefits and intergenerational fairness. We really are in the Nanny State now. New writing from me. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

WIP: bus-ray-vision. Building on my gps localization system for visionOS, I render the real-time position of all Puget Sound transit. Seems more like a novelty than worth shipping tbh.

One of those days when I'm up to 30+ six-digit one time codes entered with no end in sight... These must make up 90% of all SMS traffic these days?

Add this to the Aussie journalist shot with rubber bullets today. Completely out of control. (As intended I guess.)

Ironic sloganeering in the Highlands.

There’s an interesting meta pattern here that exemplifies how one of the largest economies in the world is basically an exotic foreign country to people who ostensibly speak for the whole country. It’s such a strange provincialism.

RIP Bill Atkinson. One of a kind www.wired.com/story/bill-a...

Bill's QuickDraw system in particular was a work of art, and underpinned a lot of the early Mac UI work. It was something that really inspired me when getting into (2D) graphics stuff as a kid. Both ahead of its time and incredibly elegant, especially the region concept. We've lost a giant.

Steam taking 1.65 GB just to get to the point where it can show me an ad for Borderlands 2 does not say much good about the state of the industry 😜 It puts it in the same class of apps as the Kindle app on my phone which keeps dying from OOM. I'm just left asking, how is that even possible?

There’s been another Tweet Chris! But from who?

Back on this bandwagon: Abandoning OpenGL Immediate Mode was a huge mistake. It hurt education, it broke thousands of existing tutorials, and the performance overhead of Immediate Mode--even a lower-performance-than-tradition implementation in a driver--is irrelevant to e.g. indie game developers.

There’s a very special type of traffic crossing in central London that stops road traffic, so that horses can cross the road. www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/cen...
