One of the things I had to cut from this piece was the story of Adolph Brand and Friedrich Radszuweit - both gay men who were leaders in the German homosexual movement before WWII, alongside Magnus Hirchfeld. Both were deeply uncomfortable with trans people and capitulated to the Nazis.

When Nazi Germany invaded France, it was divided into two: Nazi-occupied France and Vichy France; the latter being a puppet state fully in the pocket of the Nazis. This lead to instances of French-on-French battles, especially in North Africa, where free French fought Vichy French troops.
