I don't think this even qualifies as a hot take. This is just someone with boring taste. A hot take would be saying Kensei: Sacred Fist is better than Tekken 3
And yet, people like it. Love it even. I must admit that the gachapon lure of Ultimate is strong, but it's way too hectic for me. Give me a Capcom fighter any day of the week.
That guy never had a PS1 with Tekken 3, literally the best fighting game of that generation. It may be Soul Calibur 1 if you count the Dreamcast as part of that gen, but I see the Dreamcast as part of the PS2/GameCube/Xbox gen The Dreamcast is kinda like a cross between PS1 and PS2 gens timeline IMO
Look it's okay for him to be wrong. It's okay for him to not realize stuff like, I dunno... Tekken 2, Tekken 3, Dead or Alive, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Alpha 3, EX2, EX2 Plus...
I could go on and on but like I said it's ok for him to be wrong!
I'm a Smash Stan... but come on. Tekken 3? Street Fighter EX series? Virtual Fighter 2/3? Almost every single Marvel vs Capcom game? Street Fighter Alpha and III? Soul Calibur? We're talking all time greats that generation. Smash 64 isn't even the best smash game.
I enjoy a lot of fighting games on Saturn and PS1, but I think I agree. Smash Bros is my favourite fighter that generation, and every generation since.
I think he is probably right. Smash introduced some pretty unique fighting mechanics into the genera at a time when the other fighting games were very same-y.
Takes like these make me extremely grateful that I had access to a Saturn, N64, PS1, and arcades during my childhood. I wouldn't want to live in a reality where the original Smash Bros was the best fighting game of the Gen lol.

The N64 was still quite a wasteland for a lot of good genres 😂
I could go on and on but like I said it's ok for him to be wrong!
THE FIRST ONE!?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💀⚰️
for visibility
If both Mario Kart and Gran Turismo are both racing games (and nobody denies it), Smash is a fighting game too 👍🏻

Sorry N64.
Smash bruddahs, jigglypuffs only, all items enabled.
N64 did not had quantity but sure as hell had quality.
I would argue however it laid the foundation for one of the most beloved and enduring fighting games ever made.
I'd say that is worth something.
