It was going great for me until Duolingo threw me in the deep end with katakana which I hadn't learned very well since I was focused on hiragana at the time. Out of nowhere went from 100% every lesson even with new words to "what the fuck are these hieroglyphs" like it just expected me to know it
I think the fastest way to learn Japanese is to throw yourself into Japan, order food and take the bus by yourself. It is definitely more efficient than learning it in your own country.
Don't give up if it's something you want to do and we'll regret dropping! Learning it can take a long time but you'll find yourself using it fluently in no time.
