Can't believe I didn't do this years ago:
Linux on an iMac, even one as "old" as 2011 (an extremely powerful machine) is a glorious experience & the intractable obsolescence problems of OS X just go away.
Beautiful 27" screen. & Deskflow works perfectly making it a 2nd screen 4my existing work Mac

Specifically, I'm putting Linux on a 2011 iMac, so I'm joining your club! And it may well be that 2012 Macbook Pro gets the same treatment, since I can't handle Chrome's 4 second UI latency much longer.
I use the 2012 MBP for embedded dev: It's perfect for that and yet still massively overpowered

This is one of the ways in which Apple is an unforgiveably unethical company
• usb stick (< 64gb)
• download Linux Mint iso for x86-64; I picked, uh, MATE flavour for no particular reason
• target iMac. I grabbed a refurb 27" with 1TB drive for CAD $150
Result: A much better development machine than my 2018 Mac Mini (which has twice the RAM)
Also Other World Computing has a vast range of new parts for them.
The perceived (not actual!) value of these huge iMacs is so low now, THANKS TO APPLE's deliberate drive to make it so, that thousands are being landfilled every day.
