What, exactly are you afraid of? Modern reactor designs are safe and efficient. There hasn't been a reactor problem that has caused radiological damage to humans since Chernobyl, I think. Just don't use Cold War Soviet designs.

It can be recycled into new fuel. It becomes waste not because it's used up, but it comes to contain by-products that absorb neutrons. Though if you wanted to put it underground, it would be really difficult for someone to get killed by it.

The smaller power stations are more prone to leaking radioactive material.
The UK has a nuclear weapons facility close to Glasgow. There have been many allegations of leakages in the area. WM will not release the figures to the Scot. govt. Can't imagine that in London. Don't need more nuclear here.

It's kind of a baseless fear these days. And, it would be for power generation, not weapons production. That is a totally different process and different reactors. So if you get Thorium salt reactors, for example, there is basically no risk. 98% of the fuel is used up, so almost no waste.

I disagree. I have seen scientists talking about the smaller size nuclear plants being more prone to leaks. This would be a worry. I understand that these plants are not weapons, of course. However, there are substantial unofficial measurements of unacceptable radiation around Faslane.

This is where the weapons are. WM has official readings but refuses to give them to the Scottish govt. I remember the outrage over the West Lothian question: why should Scots MPs get to vote on England only matters? So why should Scotland just accept being kept in the dark about this radiation? 🤷🏼‍♂️

It’s not baseless fear it’s reality. Thorium SMRs don’t exist. Vapourware and for a good reason. See attached 2023 report on SMR issues and limitations. ESP high gamma radiation issues with Thorium reactors
