I will always recommend Isaac Asimov. And the three Bs: Bear, Brin, and Benford. I recently read The Last Watch and its sequel and loved them. The third book just came out (not pictured, but I picked it up). The Alex White trilogy pictured looks to be quite awesome, though I haven't started it yet.
