the art department to the science department as well) and thats going to lead to fewer research jobs cos companies will just use an ever constant churn of PhD students where possible.

I think these things vary a lot by discipline, but in general I agree that there has long been a push for everything and everyone that comes out of a uni to be "industry focused". We need space to explore ideas regardless of their potential to lead to a spinout company or industrial partnership.
Yeah I think art in general, and our uni in particular, are a particularly bad case, the new Dean opened his tenure by doing an opening the uni a&d conference by inserting AI into everything he talked about whilst not mentioning find art once and has halved the art students.
And its a choice, uni managers could have spent the last couple of decades finding creative ways to protect unis, but instead they've all become wannabe property developers who are credulous enough to be taken in by an obvious bubble.
