Alignment was fine, most people just don't understand how it works. Which made for headaches.
And honestly, MOST times, it didn't even matter. Only in regards to certain classes or spells did it matter.
Like there's a realm of chaotic good. What do you mean there's a realm of chaotic good?? How does that work??? How do you have a planet of entirely chaotic good people????
I dont even think ya gotta go that far. Since its got few to no mechanics around it, you can just let them be a worse/better ish person and let people around them act accordingly
See, in Moorcock's writing, Law and Chaos are cosmic forces beyond our comprehension. Humanity, life as we know it wouldn't be able to function if any of these forces dominated reality. What we need is the habitable zone of Cosmic Balance.
I don't know these days but this is what Shin Megami Tensei used to be about - a quick comes to mind: "Hell on Earth and Heaven on Earth would be equally as inhospitable to people on Earth"
(Now if I could just remember where I got that from)
In OD&D, Law is basically Western Civilization.
Chaos is there so "the good guys" can manifest their destiny all over them. Even when Good and Evil where added as additional concept, it was still mostly guided by a guy who thought "nits make lice" was a badass paladin quote.

Which raises the question: Why would I buy a game filled with mechanics I'm never going to use?
2. HA I dont pay for shit
And that is changing it. I think if something happens to affect a character's beliefs, a curse, magic, god etc.
Then saying "you go from good to neutral" is the best way of doing so without taking control of the PC or taking away agency.
...
Huh
