I just think it’s a little more salient these days to lean on the Enlightenment ideals in the Declaration—the same unalienable rights that Lincoln defended for noncitizens—when we’re talking about stripping folks of due process, habeas, basic human dignity, etc.

I always used to like when NPR would tweet out the Declaration of Independence on the 4th of July, and the right wingers would freak out. I didn’t realize it was foreshadowing.
