This is one of many things, not unlike public schools and vaccinations where you can talk about the imperfections and needed improvement but it also it's good to look at the history and see how RADICALLY this improved things. We can't really do a two steps back, one step forward with people's lives.

The problem is so many people are really willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater in the name of perfection...and they don't realize that doesn't help EITHER.

The ACA helped me w/ insurance due to expanded Medicaid mandates when I didn't have full time employment. That was a GODSEND.

Right!!!! I remember hearing about health insurance as I reached adulthood and was getting scared but then the ACA kept me on my parents insurance. Then I WORKED for the ACA at a call center, and the amount of people I helped understand and afford coverage was massive. People cried with relief.

And then when I left that job and needed insurance bc I’m also on a cocktail of meds and need quarterly check ups (if not more often), I got on the ACA. I have fantastic benefits. I pay out the ass for it come tax time bc my income varies, but it’s better than what it used to be before the ACA.

Also the coverage requirements put on ACA plans is a boon. Routine check ups, immunizations, and basics like that must be covered. Making preventative care actually affordable is so much more important than people think.

i get the argument that without the ACA we might have a stronger pathway toward universal healthcare. but when? when is that going to happen, fam? was it going to happen 15 years ago? apparently not. 5 years from now? 10 years? 20? 50? meanwhile i need my meds NOW or my life will be a tragedy

i get that it isn't ideal. neither is a 19-year-old paramedic treating your injuries instead of a seasoned doctor or surgeon. but without those paramedics, people die. a LOT of people die

It’s this mental trap of “Oh, five isn’t as much as ten, so it’s effectively only as much as two.” That’s hard to take from someone who didn’t get screwed over at two.

A lot of well-meaning people aren’t willing to accept “working towards something better” when they want “getting to best.”

We’d be bankrupt without the ACA…or…I don’t know. Even though healthcare remains ruinously expensive the magic of it with credits and such has supported my family’s health.
