US: income tax is lower so that the rich aren't fairly taxed, make up the difference by taxing all sales (except groceries). This disproportionately taxes lower income families.
UK: higher income tax and then stop worrying about it.
Oh man, and PROPERTY taxes. You'd think that would mean landlords are being taxed higher, but no, that's just a cost of doing business. It disproportionately affects middle-class families with one home because they have to earn that money themselves at their jobs.
