For most people, life in an authoritarian regime is mostly boring and tolerable.

For the people marked for eradication, not so much.

Americans aren't aware how much the illusion of normalcy persists under an authoritarian regime. There's no washed-out camera filter that kicks in. Everyone's not goosestepping everywhere they go. You can have a radically unfree society while most people, most of the time, just go about their lives.
