Americans aren't aware how much the illusion of normalcy persists under an authoritarian regime. There's no washed-out camera filter that kicks in. Everyone's not goosestepping everywhere they go. You can have a radically unfree society while most people, most of the time, just go about their lives.

Yep. Not just in Europe: in apartheid South Africa and Jim Crow USA, white people mostly lived boring, safe lives in what was a democracy to them (unless they opposed the regime), while the state was authoritarian toward Black people and other groups marked for subordination and genocide.

Difference between Jim Crow and what's about to happen to trans people is that whites saw a purpose for Black people (cheap labor) and weren't about to get rid of them all.

They want trans people gone.

This is more like Germany in the 1930s that the US in the 1920s.

I think you’re drawing a fine line that doesn’t exist? Slavery is genocide, lynching is genocide, Indian residential schools were genocide, and the Nazis modeled their 1930s policies on then-current US laws re Black and Indigenous peoples. What do you hear when white supremacists say “race war”?
