I self diagnosed with anxiety when I was having heart palpitations. I was wrong, it was myocarditis. But I reckon if I wasn't always being gaslit about EVERYTHING being anxiety then maybe I would have had some idea...

And often in cases like ADHD or Autism, people desperately want the diagnosis because it validates the experiences they have had and the trauma they have suffered.
And that can cloud their judgement.
It’s why I waited for an NHS diagnosis instead of paying.
Do you think the process would be different:more accurate at nhs? I ask cause I got diagnosis privately (didn’t want to burden nhs when I could afford it) - but if the process and criteria is different do I need to stand in the queue? It’s a serious question.
I don’t think that’s true of all private operators. It’s good to do careful research on who you would trust to do an assessment privately like any private medical care. Autists also don’t tend to need meds however they might be barred from accessing nhs autism services if they exist.

Often they don’t though.

1) I suspect (and it’s been shown) that unscrupulous private operators will diagnose you with whatever you want if you pay them.
2) Usually you can’t take a private prescription and get NHS meds
But even careful research probably won’t reveal diagnosis rates.
I should have specified I was discussing ADHD in my case.
