It used to be made with two U's but it was eventually simplified to be drawn with two V's.

It used to be written with two u's put together, but then the alphabet budget got tighter and they had to start cutting corners.

Because linguistically and historically speaking V and U are very close and have in many cases been used interchangeably. Codified orthography is a very young phenomenon.

It is pronounced double-V In French, I know this because in Canada they force you to take French classes in public schools until High School. I have forgotten most of it
