Problem with this. It's ABC news. Most of this information is begging for attention. I'm not saying this is false, but there's a lot of holes in these shallow waters that's being sprung out. I think we'll need to dig deeper to gain more additional info.

If they go public, assume it is only a matter of time before they enshittify the service until it's too painful to use. Precisely when it is too painful will be subjective, and they will seek the point that is the least painful to maximize cash flow. That point will increase until they bleed it dry.

The only alternatives I'm aware of are TeamSpeak, Revolt Chat, Matrix, and Rocket.Chat

And unfortunately, Discord has always been a proprietary for-profit business, so it was expected that it would eventually go down that rabbit hole at some stage. This wouldn't be the case if their client and server software were open source

This may be unrelated to Discord, but I have recently joined two new decentralised platforms. Their names? Pixelfed and Loops!

Btw, I'm on Matrix as well, but I certainly will check out those other decentralised platforms mentioned in the comments

It'll likely go through the usual enshitification process. Users will slowly jump ship when an alternative pops up claiming it will never turn its back on users. Rinse and repeat I guess.

At this point I try not to get attached to these platforms :(

I think if it does then perhaps Teamspeak will rise again with an additional feature set. TS 6 development could be influenced by Discord going public, perhaps.

I guess it depends on needs...Discord is an all you can eat buffet and TS is more narrowly focused - for now.
