I saw him on many occasions and he was every bit as good as his stats show. If anything, underrated (such a tough dual role). And he has kept himself very fit since retiring, which I think is admirable. It’s a shame when ?ex-players let themselves go.

I watched his whole career. Would have been better served as a Test player if he had just focused on being an opener and not kept wicket.

Averaged 46 in Tests when not keeping and 35 while keeping.

Absolutely this. Still recall his incredible form v Pakistan in 1992- felt he could have been one of our all time great openers if allowed to concentrate on that.

Watched during his international career. Had only one problem: wanting to do it all: keeping, opening, captaining, making the tea at the breaks.... Fine, fine batsman.

He played in the first test I ever went to see: England v WI @ the oval 1991. I saw WI follow on for the first time against England in years, Tuffnel get 6-25 and dear Syd Lawrence running in like a steam locomotive from
Vauxhall Rd end. Not to mention it was Viv Richard’s’ last test…

It was Alec who showed me I could both open and keep wicket. Not to his standard obviously. Lucky to have met both him and his Dad a few times as well
