They could of ended world hunger for that money. Cured a disease for that money. Couldn't we live in the future where we at least get like full dive VR so we get something?
1/ It's so irritating to me that this is the direction Zuck is using his immense wealth and influence to take VR. As a little niche gaming tool there's some fun stuff there! Alyx was incredible, and I had some fun with the Outer Wilds VR mod. If you see VR as sitting in the same category as
2/ a joystick it makes sense; a niche gaming tool that enhances some games experiences. However it should be trivially obvious that the metaverse is a stupid idea. Humans, it turns out, can differentiate actually existing in the same room together verse seeing a virtual avatar through a headset.
3/ Especially when the avatar looks like, uh... that.
And now Zuck has cordoned off some of those games into being exclusive for the rift at a time when the VR games section of the industry cannot afford that level of predatory behavior and wasted money that could have been used to fix
4/ the problems that make VR uncomfortable for many people.
I wish the world would realise that technology does not work like a tech tree in a 4x. So many of these tech industry twits seem to think that if they invest enough money they'll both unlock and get to patent some next big unlock and nope.
also second life and vrchat already exist and do exactly what meta says it wants their bullshit to do but it's not monetisable in the way techbros want
I remember everybody shitting on the Kinect when it came out. I remember how good we had it, and we didn't even know...
On a side note, I feel like you could give Skyrim modders 100 million and they'd make something 1 billion times better. And we'd have dragons in there too.
You guys remember when they announced GTA sa VR? What ever happened to that? I mean I'm not expecting anything good but going around San Andreas in VR? Sounds neat.

Food, housing, healthcare, public education, utilities, infrastructure maintenance.
How many people could we have helped?
