I've been thinking this for some time. Sure, Trump would ridicule him with some immature nickname, but Bush has nothing to lose and a lot to gain by taking a principled position, even if belatedly.

I dunno. I feel like Romney needn't be lumped in with the others. He was the first senator ever to vote to convict a president of his own party. And he was a consistent voice after Jan6. Compared to Bush/Obama/Bill Clinton, he's a profile in courage.

Barack Obama or Kamala Harris might give comfort to Democrats. Or fighting words. Maybe that would be nice. But that's not what we "need." What we really need is for people to break through the polarization wall so that it's not just Democrats & the Bulwark staff saying, "This is not normal."

We need to break through the calloused attention of the electorate. "Democrats say X, Y, Z" is not breaking through. We need Republicans to stand up. We don't even need those Republicans to be popular. We just need their voices to help us sound the alarm.

There is a feeling of ownership (I mean that exactly how it sounds) among a lot of people when it comes to Obama and Harris, and it goes a little something like “we gave you this stage and we didn’t have to, so you owe us a song and dance when we want to see it.” Regardless of whether it helps.

I agree, and it drove me nuts how many people on our general side of things acted like she was suddenly dictating campaign policy or going to be given a job in the administration when she was literally putting her life on the line for our democracy.
