Does it have to be recent? My go-to recovery-from-sick-as-a-dawg books are always Golden Age crime novels. Suave, posh 'tecs, like Ngaio Marsh's Alleyn, madly in love with artists and writers who refuse them. (PD James snitched that angle v successfully).
