A grid-like network of collector and arterial roads allows you to get more coverage for each dollar spent on transit, to make the routes more direct, and to generate more ridership to help pay for the frequency.
Having metro lines whose cars came every 6-12 mins in DC completely changed it - wonderful, used every day to go everywhere.
Now in SoCal with no high frequency options, I went back to not using public transit at all.
