I had this idyllic idea growing up that when major stuff happened, world war 2, the American civil rights movement, hell, even the American civil war, the “bad” guys just kinda went away. Becoming an adult was realizing that they just brewed and stewed and schemed their way into the current mess
Been watching this video about Japan’s “rebranding” post WW2/America fucking them over in the late 1800s and it makes it so apparent. Kinda sickening the right will preach about indoctrination then primarily traditional christian schooling will not provide the global context of the country’s actions
The messaging post WW2 is very obvious in retrospect, especially in relation to Japan essentially becoming a proxy state to spy on Japan/North Korea and setting up a western style economy in a country that was isolated from the world for a very long time
Fascism gets a new name and a red hat instead of a red armband, the snake oil cures and get-rich-quick schemes get rebranded, and people fall for it every time.
People seriously struggle with coming to terms with the reality that ”deplorables” was not an insult, but factual. And there are many millions of them. ”What now?” becomes a stupidly hard question very fast.

I’ve long known about what they did to their neighbors, but perhaps I also felt bad b/c of atomic bombing.
