It's Paralympics time (yay!) please I am begging you be cool and normal about this. Celebrate athletes for their skill, being at the top of their game, and dedicating years to their work, not for 'overcoming disability.'

Are we sure about this?
The reason these athletes endeavours are so incredible is partly because of the additional barriers they have faced. Would they say they want these barriers downplayed, ignored, hidden?
No athlete is “normal” so it is pretty hard to normalise. I remember an interview in the 2012 paralympics with an athlete who was pretty upset that they might have to compete against someone who he suspected hadn’t faced the same barriers (I think wheelchair basketball?)
I may have this wrong, but my point is I’m not sure those of us watching should decide on the athletes behalf or on behalf of those watching how they view the tremendous achievements.
