Well, it's been a while, so a little hard to be specific, but the two main characters are great, and bounce off each other in really interesting and entertaining ways, it has a real edge to it that (in my view) Leonard started to lose later on, and the ending absolutely kills.
My hero. But I haven't read that since probably 1980. If you think it's that good, I must have another run at it. (and Swag, and Stick, and Unknown Man No 89, and...)
Well, as good (great) as it is, he was still only finding his style. Over the next two decades regular readers could see clearly how he continued to refine and progress. By the time he got to GET SHORTY, there was virtually no exposition, just telling dialogue. Screenplays of genius.
See, I think he was at his best in the 70s and early to mid-80s. RUM PUNCH and GET SHORTY and so on are very good, but there was a toughness to his earlier books that later on becomes a little frothy for my taste.
