I've been working on an expression sheet for Monty because I realized I so rarely draw him *not* smiling, that I need to practice it π his face needs to be more squishy!
Like, he is the type of character to smile most of the time, especially in front of other people, but that doesn't mean I can get away with not knowing what his frown looks like lmao
Ah gosh I don't feel like they are on model tbh! But that's why I consider them studies too because I'm getting used to drawing the characters. But thank you!
That means a lot to hear honestly. I grew up learning that on model meant exact copy no matter what and i...can't honestly do that. I tend to change the hair everytime I draw it and other small things. Plus these are studies so I'm constantly refining the design as I sketch
And yes! It's really really helpful, esp for characters i don't draw as often or struggle with. For instance Izar got a bit of an overhaul. Here is their prior art for reference. I didn't go in with intent on changing their design but it just sorta happened along the way.
Iβm doing one now, both because Iβve never bothered to do one and because Iβve barely been able to think about art so it was a nice brainless thing to do to keep drawing. Itβs been fun! A couple of them I really like

They look so good and every face is on model. Genuinely impressive.
Actively working on designs with sketches like these is a great way to refine them. And they're very cool to see <3
