Not surprised. Mental health care insurance has always been a mess. Building ACA on top of quicksand was always a recipe for disaster. It’s been 15 years with no improvements.

Not highlighted in the article — but a rampant and systematic strategy by health insurers, is to deny payment to the few providers (therapists, etc) who are still willing to accept insurance.

For an independent psychologist who gets between $75-$150/therapy hour, but then has to spend 1-3 hours to collect from the insurance company, the practice of therapy is no longer a viable financial business —

And even if health insurance doesn't profit from blocking access to mental health care for profit, there are insane wait times to get an intake appt - it's about 3 months for most patients in my city.

A LOT can happen to, or because of, an unmedicated schizophrenic or bipolar person in 3 months.

Here in Oz it can be 6 months to see a psych, or hope someone cancels/can't make an appointment to get

This is with a public health system, speaking of which hospital psychs are threatening to quit over pay (I'm ambivalent on this because I get it but it means hell for patients)
