First counting with 83% of the vote in Germany. CDU +SPD have large majority with the Alt Fer Deutschland (AfD, extreme right) garnering 20% doubling their base. Semi-good news, but still troubling.

CDU and SPD *might* have a small majority *if* FDP and BSW fail the 5% hurdle. Won't be clear until late. I am afraid it will again require a 3-way coalition with too much compromise and little change. AfD coming in at lower end certainly good.
In 2025 this result counts as good news. Germany can exclude AfD from power, limiting Putin's influence, and help lead a strong European response of support for Ukraine.
Hopefully Mike Flynn and Musk didn’t examine their voting machines before their election. Not to self American. No reason for ordinary Americans to touch our voting machines.
In the Netherlands the far right got 25 % of the vote and got in the governing coalition. But they can't pass any law they want because most other parties vote against it or it doesn't even get a vote because it's unconstitutional. Call it 'lame duck far right'.
Young German men - especially those feeling disenfranchised in the East are very similar to young US men who love Donald Trump's authoritarianism. Increasing wealth gap, bleak prospects for future and a firehise of disinformation on social media make them easy marks for radicalization.
16 years of Merkel government neglecting Germany's infrastructure and enriching corporations plus Putin flooding Europe with refugees left the SPD in an impossible position. Merz will pick up where Merkel left off. Service & pensions cuts etc.. and miraculously lifting debt brake. Sound familiar?
I hesitate to invoke the name but centrist, progressive parties need a Newt Gingrich-style-but-in-reverse type messenger, and message discipline. Realizing too that it's a new era, maybe someone has better ideas here

It is good news, Sir!
CDU will be strong in leading Europe towards unity and clear facing of Putin and Trump.
OC we will have SPD as part of the story, but with Pistorius and more modern politicians in charge.
If a 3rd. Partner is needed- lets see.
It will take a few weeks to sort out the new 🇩🇪 government, but it will be solidly pro-EU and pro-Ukraine and have been elected despite Trump/Vance & Musk's best efforts. A good day for Europe General.
I think most people underestimate how the CDU and especially CSU have changed recently. It is a similar move the republicans did 25 years ago. Cuddling with extremists to get into power. Too many people look on labels, rather actual actions. /1
It’s Bad News, CDU’s Merz offended anyone from his political opponents except Alice Weidel from AfD. He is so stupid he thinks he has won and now somehow anyone will like and support him. Inexperienced, shortsighted, power hungry.
I mean, he’s no Trump and there’s no Musik in sight, but it’s bad.
It's concerning the degree of support for such a terrible party. Thankfully Musk was the kiss of death (that's hubris for you) galvanizing the better angels among the German voters. I hope this is indicative of a pattern, particularly in Canada.
I hope the SPD allows the CDU to co-op some of the more palatable positions from the AfD so that they can pick off some of the AfD curious voters. The AfD must have all of their oxygen removed so they can be diminished in influence.
That actually does not work. Studies showed, that if you pick up extrem positions in the middle, you just strengthen the original, whilst legitimizing extreme positions in regular discourse.
Or bluntly said: You'll not convince a racist to stop by being a little racist as well...
Afaik, unfortunately, mainstream center parties adopting right wing positions formlerly taken by the far right does not lead to less votes for the far right. Once the voter sees that some preferred "sensible" positions are successfully adopted, he will just vote again far right - because it works.
Nazis doubling their base is in no universe semi-good news. Their numbers should not be rising. It's a testament to how easily people become indoctrinated to evil.
This is troubling, but watching democracy disappear here in the States has me more concerned. You have to see what's happening with Musk and Trump and have to agree they'll end democracy here by the end of the year if someone doesn't stand up. So, sorry I don't care as much about Germany
It's less troubling than you think. AFD gets less votes than predicted in polls. Turnout in Germany was through the roof (84%) and polls show that Germans (except AFD-voters) don't want AFD in a governing coalition. The center held.
Very disappointing, honestly. My wife, her family and our friends are in shock. Scholz needs to step down as SPD head and pass leadership over to Pistorius. People here felt there was no commanding presence at the wheel.

Suffocated! Stamp them out. Leave no embers of the Nazis.
Watch Canada.
Ironic that Germany may find itself having to lead the fight against fascism.
