How has following the rules worked over the past several decades? Or even just the last 8 years? Genuine question because it really looks to me like trying to play nice hasn't worked. You gotta give people a concrete reason to think it matters.

It's not about following the rules, it's about advancing a platform that is morally, ethically and socially beneficial. Eschewing nepotism is a basic tenet of this approach.
Don't get me wrong, I loathe Trump & Co. But who wants to share a hot tub in hell with them when your time comes?
I don't believe in hell so I can only look at the world we live in - conservatives didn't stack SCOTUS by accident. If that is how they are going to operate, how does doing the opposite actually prevent fascism, and protect the most vulnerable?
Sorry, using hell as a euphemism for regrets on your deathbed.
Totally agree that the GOP has manipulated the public and used double speak for the past decade. But given that, how does pardoning Hunter further a democratic goal?
I wasn't sure if you were being literal, sorry for the mixup!
If it were my son, and I knew how he was going to be raked over the coals because of his surname, I'd have done the same thing. What's more, how would NOT pardoning him have furthered a democratic goal?
Pish posh, no worries! This is the internet, you should get to say what you're thinking 😅
Maybe that's the difference - I would visit my son every single day I could if he was in prison. But if he was convicted of a crime, I would have to let someone more impartial decide if he deserved a pardon.
Haha thanks, I just want to make sure I don't offend people who genuinely want to converse. :)
I'd be afraid of turning him over to people who*aren't* impartial. It would feel like abandonment to me. There are definitely people serving far more time than what true justice would allow for.
It furthers it by robbing those who politicized Hunter Biden's situation to get at his father of the fruits of their labours: having him far more harshly treated than he would have been if he's not been Biden's son.
It wasn’t morally or ethically responsible for the right to target Hunter because of who his father was. The Bidens have had enough tragedy in their lives. Joe has more integrity than most of Washington put together have. I think he’s right to do this.
The justification that the Bidens have suffered ignores the fact that so many other families are powerless in the face of overreach by DAs who are "tough on crime."
Hunter received the best defense anyone could have in his situation but he was still found guilty in a court of law. What's unfair?
Perhaps the most of any in Washington, but I feel like that's a pretty short yardstick.
The GOP has sold its soul to the devil and they will reap the reward. But jumping off the cliff just because they're doing it is for the Lemmings. I wish we were better than this.
I think the difference is their motives. Trump pardons people to keep them beholden to him. Biden is righting a wrong. Hunter would not have been so relentlessly persecuted if not for his father.
Very valid point. But from my perspective, he needed to keep his nose clean (hah) and follow the rules, just like the rest of us.
A higher profile made him a target, but it also afforded him wealth and opportunity none of us will ever see. How does pardoning a guy like this help America?
Do you mean Hunter? I agree that he has screwed up but many people do that and don’t have to face the scrutiny of the world & be the target of the right’s conspiracy theories.
Pardoning him shows the kinder, gentler side of America that we’re not going to see much of for the next four yrs.
I agree that it does not validate any of the future cock-ups of the incoming Trump administration.
But I very much believe it is a pivotal moment in that it destroys Biden's credibility and further impairs the ability of Democrats to bring more into the party.
My understanding is that he was convicted on three separate firearms charges and several counts of tax evasion. I think he pled guilty to the ladder set of charges, but fought the allegations of illegal possession of firearms in court but was found guilty.

America is in pain, not just the Biden family.
President Biden did what he could to stop the insanity.

But I wholey appreciate your morality.

The reason why may not be palatable, but he benefited greatly from the same exposure that was eventually also his downfall.

Am I missing anything?
