I am disappointed to note that very few of the people commenting on the Mauler thread actually watched the video. The repeating sentiment seems to be "I can't wait for Mauler to cover this...but I'm not actually going to watch the vid, but I'm SURE it's bad."
That's hilarious. I'm a RLM media guy myself and they've got their own issues but they've never been grifter reactionary types even if their takes can broadly align
What did they think of Acolyte anyway? I've been avoiding that video because I haven't watched it yet so I didn't want to risk spoilers
Also, how did they know if I didn't know what I was talking about if they posted the video under ten minutes after I posted it? The video is 90 minutes long.
If it brings you some comfort, they DID discuss the video topics as they came up. Humorously, a mini tangent on Drinker happened when a clip appeared in your video
This comment is interesting, because it completely misunderstands the point of the vid.
The focus isn't that "new is good." The focus is that stagnation is bad. That might sound like the same point but from the other perspective, but it's a fundamentally different idea.
not sure if this is a good example but: the sequels bring up a fantastic glimpse into how embers of the empire still remained much like how in real life we STILL have to fight against Nazi's even though the third reich is gone.
-which in turn helps audiences understand that the evil the Empire or the Nazi's represented are easy to identify and that we have to be vigilant when we see it rising otherwise we get Snoke and the first order.
The worst part is that he also misundestands what deconstruction in cinema is and doesnt know how deconstruction applies to film (besides trying to position himself as an expert on the subject). Which is pretty in character for Mauler and his fans.
That's a phrase I'm all too familiar with, frequently used by people who think bullshit spoken with a soft tone and in a verbose manner is "logical" or "rational".
I loved the video Ant, you did an excellent job!! I agreed with almost every point you made except for one glaring sin you commited: you made me listen to Critical Drinker. :/
Star Wars has had a stagnant air since 1983 and the Death Star II. The old EU/Legends books are fine, but there are a LOT of trilogies (Thrawn, Jedi Academy, Corellia, Black Fleet, etc.). Heck, Han Solo had two.
And they're almost always fighting something Empire-adjacent.
It didn't help that LucasFilm essentially gatekept entire eras off from writers, forcing them to spin their wheels, for when George would eventually get around to telling those tales. It isn't a coincidence that there weren't any Clone Wars stories until 2003.
Star Wars, and let's go ahead and lump every other IP in there, is at its best when it does something new. Maybe it doesn't stick the landing, but fear of failure shouldn't be a deterrent.
To stay relevant, they must grow beyond what they are.
Honestly the video reminded me of a thought I’d had to myself about a decade ago
The phrase, “Superheroes are our Great Modern Myths, like how Hercules was one of the Great Ancient Myths”. Has been one of the most consequential things to happen to modern Pop culture
Obviously “Superheroes” is kinda just acting as a stand in for Star Wars here.
But there’s just been this treatment of Pop culture characters and Icons as if they’re people’s friggin religion that’s largely resulted in stories that are overall for the worse. Either people poorly understanding them-

One person just went "Uh...King Lear?"
That’s the least surprising thing ever.

They did it with the last video, too, that they obsessed over.

Are they that type of crowd?
Great video, by the way!
And they're almost always fighting something Empire-adjacent.
And I understand the decision.

Stories are at their best when they’re simply allowed to be stories.
