Yup. People who make goofy claims otherwise are less informed about the facts of their world. Journalism is like other enterprises based broadly on the scientific method and humanism: permanently flawed. It's also the best approach yet invented. Find 2-3 good news outlets, support and follow them.

If one thinks that the story is that a man was murdered plus the solving of the crime, then you are correct. But if one thinks the story is that the murder reveals that the public is no longer willing to put up with insurance companies, then social media may be the place to be. /1

Based on the past few days, it seems to me that we are at a watershed moment, a cultural phase change. So I am interested in the murder ballads, the box car graffiti, the memes, the tattoos, and the emergence of a folk hero. This aspect has been poorly covered by the news media. /2

Many of the health stories people are posting are deeply personal and stories they may never have told in public before. The conventional framing of crime & punishment which is where the media coverage wants to go with this is being outweighed by personal experience with suffering & death. /4

I disagree. This story was nuanced, it focused in great detail on the pain Americans often experience dealing with insurance companies. One graph includes a factual and important detail: the system feels workable to people until they are forced to rely on it.

There is something happening here. And, to paraphrase Bob Dylan, we don't know what it is. Perhaps part of the story as we will understand it later is that the news media did not yet understand how to cover it. /end
