I'd say that's true for Spain but not for Estonia, for example. But in general I totally agree with you on what needs to be done. Very few people will want to fight for austerity Europe

Yet, most European governments continue to empower the far right. While they (try to) stand up to authoritarians abroad they cozy up to authoritarians at home, legitimizing and normalizing the far right with their policies. While they increase spending on defense, they continue with austerity. 2/

More defense spending might be needed to face the Russian threat. But if it comes at the cost of social spending, education, support for local communities and civil society, it won't make Europe safer. It will just provide more weapons for the authoritarian leaders of tomorrow.

That’s right. I don’t think it should come at the expense of social spending, but increasing military spending without cuts to social spending is what’s being proposed in Germany right now. The UK path differs and I think that’s less likely to succeed (but their fiscal room is different, too).

Difficult to see how the UK could borrow similar amounts of money without the markets getting the jitters. So if we increase military spending (which I think is necessary) that money needs to come from somewhere.

First the government spends from its account at the central bank. Later taxes are meant to recover the spending. Not in full as the deficit is covered by bonds
