Honestly, whenever I order Chinese food take-out, I always ask if it has water chestnuts in it. In some cases, restaurants will add them on request. Love them as well.
Water chestnuts exist for people who enjoy disappointment in crunchy, flavorless form. Along with baby corn, it’s one of only two food items (which I’ve tried) that I dislike. But I’m happy for you!
I love water chestnuts so much that once when the dumb can opener didn't open them properly, I used a pair of pliers to wrench the rest of the lid open.
Yes I did cut my thumb quite badly on jagged metal like an idiot, and like I knew I would going in.
I am from northern Canada, I grew up seeing them on TV, Xmas movies etc. I thought they would be wonderful. First time I went to New York in the fall I couldn't wait to try them, I did. So gross, yuck. I'm glad you love them, someone has to. LOL
I’m sorry to inform you, although it may actually be good news, but if you had roasted chestnuts in NYC, those weren’t water chestnuts. Despite the name, water chestnuts are not even chestnuts. They taste like sweet, crunchy little apples, more or less. With some other stuff going on.
Hm, never had one, and have only just now learned that they're not nuts at all. Guess I can try 'em next time I have the chance—I wonder what they're like.

The brilliant part of living in a properly multicultural city like London is the sheer variety of food available.
