I certainly couldn't imagine sending a daughter of mine to a college in a state with an abortion ban. I'm sure that thought impacts a lot of final decisions.

Yeah at a minimum you're talking about needing to plan for the possibility of a trip home or to a nearby state for routine abortive care, at a worst case it could mean getting her to a hospital that will provide proper care on an emergency basis. There are other, larger risks out there, but still.

It will be interesting to see how much out-of-state tuition costs balance against parent fears and protection issues. Will colleges need to pony up more dollars to get out out-of-state students or will they be satisfied with in-state enrollments and not care.

I went through the college selection process last year with my now college freshman. MANY parents expressed similar concerns in various national social media groups. Their students were the first to eliminate certain states from their selection process. Womens health and LGBTQ+ safety

It does, but we also have a state legislature that is 80% Republican that routinely overrides the voters and Governor. They've already tried to pass bans a couple of times. The state Supreme Court stopped it but it's only a matter of time before they figure out a way to move the justices out.

I asked a “fiscal conservative/socially liberal” TCU senior excited to move to Tampa after graduation if Florida’s abortion policy factored into her decision.
She hadn’t considered it.

My takeaway: privilege, education, family wealth insulates her from concerns about access to healthcare.

I think it's also baldfaced ignorance too. Wealth/class insulates patients for the vast majority of procedures (relatively early in pregnancy) but it doesn't help you if your water breaks at 20 weeks and you get to race sepsis.

IMO, long term, states that had been seeing strong economic growth from population growth (Texas) are going to see economic headwinds due to these draconian social policies. The highest earning most economically mobile residents can choose a different state to live in. You get negative selection.

There is no reason why any young woman starting a life should live in a Red State. Access to funds that may allow one to fly to another state may insulate some but when a wanted pregnancy goes sideways later and there’s no time—in a red state, it could be a matter of life and unaliving…LEAVE

I was wondering if we’d see this start happening. Texas has a lot of major corporate HQs as well (Frito-Lay, Keurig Dr Pepper, Toyota just in Plano) and I wonder if they start leaving because they can’t get people to move here.
