Awful story. Three kids were running a lemonade stand and some driver just ploughed into them. Kids aren't safe outside because of vehicles and the irresponsible people that operate them.

I drive by a suburban version of one of these almost daily. When I was younger I might have thought all the please slow down signs were not needed.... as an adult... whew. I myself at least make sure to always do very cautious and safe speeds but I have seen folks fly down that road.
How tall the first part of the hood is particularly relevant to pedestrian survivability. It affects whether you go over the hood, or under the car in a medium speed crash.
Cars have also gotten much more powerful and the power feels much safer from the driver's position. Suspensions and noise reduction and just better engineering than before. Doesn't change physics though.
You hit a lemonade stand in a 90's Ranger and you're still gonna hurt people. The car size issue is more relevant when someone is hit in a crosswalk or side swiped changing lanes, etc.

Ps - Covid damaged spacial and reflex abilities in a chunk of the population, increased strokes, etc so there's that too
people are worse drivers. there's a selfishness and sociopathy that's developed
Also, drivers have gotten way more distracted.
