I'm starting to think that repeatedly grooming NYC machine pols to be the next generation of Democratic congressional leadership was one of the great mistakes of the post-Citizens United era. Their loyalties are misplaced, their instincts unhelpful, & above all they are visibly, painfully soft

My thoughts on last nights firings

The University of Pennsylvania is an Ivy League institution with an endowment of $22.3 billion. There is nowhere safe from the total culture war the Trump-Musk administration is illegally waging against America's centers of science & education

Everything right now should be understood as gangsterism. www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/gangster-p...

“We tried voting and it didn’t work” is a super common thing to hear on this website for being complete fucking nonsense. The thing is that voting *did* work and the people who did it more *won*, it’s that it was the villains.

How it started. How it’s going

So there is a law that says the Pentagon can't just fire people willy nilly but have to carry out a review to ensure that it won't affect readiness. Why isn't there a law requiring that in every dept? How can it be legal for some rich weirdo to just take a wrecking ball to the U.S. govt?

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

Democrats did a great job focusing all their attention on protecting norms and defending institutions that are unable to do the thing I do at every family event, tell an old man who’s spouting nonsense to fuck off.

drugs have taken too many beloved celebrities from us over the years but drugs also have a rare chance right now to radically rehabilitate their image

If you’re wondering why I declined to talk to the NYTimes, then you haven’t been following my account for very long. They bear a direct responsibility for the current situation we find ourselves in, and I responded by laying out my position and that I would only talk to @jamellebouie.net

this man is on fucking drugs, he is on a lot of them, and every member of the white house press corps and every republican member of congress is deliberately overlooking it

feel like we're at the point where we can maybe start wording the letters a little more sternly than "it appears to violate Department guidelines!"

So if you criticize Elon Musk, Trump’s DOJ will send you this letter. Members of Congress must have the right to forcefully oppose the Trump Administration. I will not be silenced.

I know it was hard to tell at the time and hindsight is 20 20 but one early sign that maybe these Dems shouldn’t have voted to confirm someone who Trump 2.0 picked for a cabinet level post is that Trump had picked them for a cabinet level post www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-...

We were visiting an elderly relative who far away. He said that he could die in his apartment & nobody would know. I wrote a program & put it on an old iPad. It is always open on his desk & every time that he passes it, he punches the button. It's recorded in a database & sends me a notification.

worth mentioning again that senate democrats’ plan for strategic confirmation votes in exchange for blocking the worst nominees was a complete failure

REVEALED: Climate deniers on both sides of the Atlantic are embracing Elon Musk, with one saying "We welcome Elon Musk into the climate red pill group.” As recently as 2022 they were mocking him as a member of the billionaire "climate elite." www.desmog.com/2025/02/20/e...

One interesting* aspect of the current moment is the gap between how fast a form of government can change and ability of its citizens to grasp that change. People continue to behave as if the old rules still existed, despite the fact they're watching them be destroyed. * horrifying

So, ridicule Americans who want to flee abroad all you want. But remember, there’s a reason why Germany produced the most Nobel laureates before World War II, but the U.S. took the lead afterward.

How we did it: Texas Won’t Study How Its Abortion Ban Impacts Women, So We Did

Awful: Numerous scientists and researchers were just fired at NIH's center for treating Alzheimer's, sources tell me. They fear Trump-Musk cuts could dramatically set back our ability to treat dementias. New reporting from me here: newrepublic.com/article/1917...
