There are also a number run by commercial organisations such as Kellogg’s as charitable ventures. I used to be deeply cynical about this but the need is such that we have to be counterintuitive about it

Yes but most of these are subsidised by the government or the school, with charging the parents for the rest. With this, it means more money in all parents pockets and schools will be properly funded to accommodate.

All very well, but it’s an utter scandal that this and food banks are required in a Country such as ours. Wealth inequality is endemic and @uklabour.bsky.social need to sort it with radical measures not tinkering at the edges

Significantly increasing tax thresholds and increasing taxes on the super wealthy and big business excess profits would be somewhat radical these days and would have an immediate effect. I’d also like to see an initial 12 month halving of VAT. Another quick fix 🤷‍♂️

Maybe in the next budget? I'm happy with what they're doing so far. I'd like a windfall tax on various companies with billions in profit. Profit is fine, but not profiteering.

With all the concern about youth crime (apparently it's alarming some folks), this seems a far more sensible, cost effective, evidence based and compassionate intervention than lowering the age for incarceration and increasing penalties (which has no evidence-base for reducing youth crime).

Breakfast clubs work, I worked in a behavioural school for many years and we got funding fo a breakfast club. Not only did it make sure the children had had something to eat but it created a great social hub for the whole school

This is a great idea, it solves so many potential problems, from school behaviour to child nutrition and addresses collateral problems like rush hour traffic and home energy usage, the sooner it goes nationwide the better.

12% of schools already have subsidised breakfast clubs(where 40% of pupils are from income deprived areas)
so the opposite of the WFA,which is no longer universal because "some" pensioners don't need it
we are giving it to everyone,even though most could afford it.

I know from experience that this will require school staff to work extra hours. Unsocial early hours. I still haven't seen any discussion of how staff in so many schools will, en masse & more or less simultaneously, all be persuaded to work those hours. Time & a half would work, but they're too mean
