Watching @edconway.bsky.social dissect the latest immigration figures and it’s remarkable what a tiny percentage of the number comes from people on small boat crossings

Completely disproportionate to the attention given to this by the media and many politicians

As a diversion tactic it works well - I know many who think small boats are the main issue - I’m often in a minority when I explain its smoke and mirrors intended to disguise shockingly poor government

When anyone mentions the numbers coming over on boats, I point out that it is such an insignificant percentage, before going on to say that they risk their lives to get here...!

The major issue in my opinion is that because we left the EU we now depend on an enormous amount of foreign workers to fill particularly NHS and care worker jobs.

Yep, when I was over in the Other Place seeing posts Othering I was curious so looked up the 2023 figures. 29k, 0.04% compared to UK population and not enough to fill Stoke City FC stadium. Of that only 8.7k didn't qualify for asylum, 0.01% compared to pop and not enough to fill Grimsby FC stadium.
