It is a system that has been designed to be unfit for purpose. UC, for example, requires that you begin the benefit in debt, having to take an advance. You may make the mistake of claiming UC immediately after losing work, but before your final wage...meaning you'll get nothing from UC for 10 weeks.

It's a common mistake. If I made a UC claim today, and was paid my last monthly wage from work on Monday that wage payment eould nil my first UC payment and I would not receive any money from UC for 10 weeks from joining, meaning my last wage would need to last 2 and half times longer than usual.

It's also just performative cruelty - cutting benefits doesn't make any economic sense. Apart from housing benefit (which goes into the pockets of landlords) social security payments get recycled back into the economy, contributing to growth.

I'm in a FB group offering guidance and support to self-employed people navigating UC. The number of times "My job coach told me X" is responded to with "That's wrong, they aren't properly trained, here's the relevant legislation, demand a mandatory reconsideration" is beyond laughable.

When I was on UC, several times my work coach was shocked at the way the system worked. Eg. Requesting mortgage support: it was news to her that if you make 1p from self-employment it resets the 9 month waiting period!
And she was at least TRYING, gods help those who get those who don't care.

Oh, and screenshot EVERYTHING. Communications can vanish from your journal, and if your claim ends/is ended, you lose all access to it, so every statement, journal message, grab them and save them, they may be all the evidence you get.

If we had #BasicIncome and #3DayWorkWeek that would reduce our pollutions by 40% and traffic by 50% if half of us work first 3 days and the other half the next 3 days of the week, all of us would have 4 day weekend every week and #ClimateCrisis wouldn’t exist.
