if this is a red wolf, is it possible that one the reasons of the red wolf's endangerment is confusion with coyotes? because it would've fooled me 😭

Red wolves and coyotes are related and can be mistaken for each other, so red wolves in the eastern NC are given bright collars. They use “placeholder coyotes” (bonded coyote pairs where the male has a vasectomy) in the red wolf’s range to prevent hybridization (wolves/coyotes mate for life).

Does it make any difference if it’s a coyote? Coyotes are demonized as well and should also be left alone.

while i agree with that statement, coyotes are legal game as far as i'm aware, and my question was not on how moral it was to hunt coyotes, but rather if the access to hunt coyotes has caused mix-ups. that being said, i do believe the unneccesary hunting of animals is wrong.

There are Red Wolves at the Nature Center in Asheville. I got to see pups grow up. I’m so very fortunate. They’re gorgeous!

LaPaz County confiscated a beautiful Mexican Red Wolf mix and her pups, 2 years ago, from a family living off the grid. I could never find out what happened to it. Wonder if the County even knew what it was.

Hi Betsy! Yes, USFWS is planning on releases this year. We're hopeful that releases and wild births (fingers crossed) will continue to increase the wild numbers.

They are smaller than most wolves. Animal murderers think they are coyotes. These murderers think it is fun to kill coyotes, raccoons, opossums, and any animal that is unfortunate enough to be living. Endangered or not, they don't care.
